Unfinished Business and the Power of Presence: Empty Chair Work Reimagined is a 90-minute experiential training designed for therapists who want to deepen their clinical toolbox. This workshop introduces a fresh approach to the empty chair technique by integrating narrative therapy principles and sensory-based tools to support emotional processing. Participants will learn how to guide clients through unresolved experiences using presence, structure, and creativity, bringing voice to the unspoken and healing to what’s been left behind.

Every therapist encounters it: the emotional residue of unfinished conversations, unspoken truths, or internalized narratives that keep clients stuck. In this workshop, you’ll learn to reimagine the empty chair technique through a presence-based, sensory-informed lens that helps your clients move from emotional tension to therapeutic release.

This training is experiential and practical. You’ll leave with techniques you can apply immediately, with individuals navigating trauma, grief, identity struggles, or relational healing.

  1. Describe the concept of “unfinished business” and its psychological impact on client progress.
  2. Explain the core components of the empty chair technique and its role in emotional processing.
  3. Demonstrate how therapist presence influences client regulation and depth of engagement during chair work.
  4. Utilize sensory integration tools to support grounding and containment during emotionally intense dialogue.
  5. Apply narrative prompts that help clients externalize, reframe, and process unresolved emotional experiences.
  6. Differentiate how to adapt the empty chair technique for various populations, including trauma survivors, grief clients, and identity-focused work.

Upon attendance of the workshop and completion of the post workshop survey, participants will receive a certificate reflecting their fulfillment of the workshop via email within 48 hours.
